Meet the Visual and Performing Arts Department

Mr. Marcus Riter - Department Head

Marcus Riter is a Co-Chair of the Fine Arts Department, and oversees all theatrical productions and events in the Fine Arts Center. Mr. Riter has been teaching at Charlotte Catholic for 12 years and has been in education for 17 years. He earned his B.A. in Theatre from Appalachian State University and his Masters in Education in Theatre from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Mr. Riter is a versatile director, playwright, actor, costumer and set designer, and a proud parishioner of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church.

Mrs. Jennifer Taylor - Department Head

A native of Charlotte, Mrs. Taylor is an alumni of Charlotte Catholic High School along with her sisters and parents.  She graduated from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC with a BA in Dance Education with a teacher certification in K-12 and has been teaching in the Charlotte Catholic community for 19 years. After her first two years of teaching for CMS, she was finally lucky enough to call Charlotte Catholic High School her home and has been here ever since.  Mrs. Taylor currently teaches dance, aerobics, jazzercise and PE classes as well as serves as the head coach for the dance team.

Mr. Barry Johnson

In a faraway time and place before the Gelflings had settled in Thra during the Age of Harmony, Mr. Johnson earned his BA from Emory University with a double major in English and Religion, and his MBA from Harvard University. After a twenty-five year business career during which he suffered through too many missed flights, meals on the road, task committees, and corporate bankruptcies, he began his teaching career. Mr. Johnson taught statistics at Winthrop University School of Business for three years, and he spent sixteen years at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, SC, where he taught English and journalism and midwifed the production of sixteen high school yearbooks. Mr. Johnson is in his sixth year at Charlotte Catholic High School. His class portfolio this year includes English 10 Advanced, Photography Levels I, II, and III, Introduction to Digital Graphic Design, and SAT Test Prep.In his spare time Mr. Johnson enjoys settling into a comfortable chair at home with a well edited dictionary.

Mr. Christopher Jones

Mr. Jones is a member of the Visual and Performing Arts Department. He teaches Guitar classes.

Mrs. Melissa Parks

Melissa Parks is in her 6th year at Charlotte Catholic and in her 9th year of education. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Winthrop University with a major in Art Education and a specialization in painting. She also studied abroad for a semester at Florence University of the Arts in Florence, Italy where she studied printmaking and watercolor. Mrs. Parks teaches Art 1, Art 2, Art 3, Honors Portfolio Prep, Honors Art 4 and AP Studio Art.
